Yong Ho Jeon Impeccable Solomon?

Solomon's idolatry, his murder of his political enemies, and his role in the breakup of the kingdom, which are bluntly presented in Kings, are omitted in Chronicles. Is King Solomon presented as impeccable in Chronicles, in stark contrast to his portrayal in Kings? Is Solomon idealized in Chronicles at the cost of honest writing of history? To this question, the consensus view says, «Yes.» However, Yong Ho Jeon takes a different route and maintains that the Chronicler's portrait of Solomon is much more nuanced than many suppose.
Jeon employs a «reader-sensitive» approach that considers the biblical writer's intention to use his readers' prior knowledge and the reading process itself to present a portrait of Solomon. Applying this methodology results in a new interpretation of Solomon not only in Chronicles but in Kings as well.

Charles Sigel Did He Say That?

This book explores some of the «difficult» sayings of Jesus. They are «hard» sayings because through the centuries these sayings challenge the church and continue to challenge us. This study explores both how the church through its history has handled these sayings and what these sayings may say to us today. Over the centuries there have been many attempts to soften these saying to make them more palatable to the contemporary church. This book explores these alternatives while allowing the reader or class to come to their own answers about the meaning of these passages. Through careful examination of the wording, key terms, historical context, and the historical attempts to understand the «hard» saying, this book will allow the reader or class to explore the saying in greater detail and clarity.

April Love-Fordham Dismantling Injustice

The world needs leaders who are prepared to dismantle injustice. Through the story told in the Song of Solomon, you will learn to use the one tool that heals both victim and oppressor: God's love. This once popular interpretation of the Song of Solomon details a young woman's struggle between submitting to King Solomon as his sex slave and accepting her beloved Shepherd's invitation to come away. The scholars who subscribed to this interpretation believed the Song of Solomon was a rallying cry to dismantle the injustices perpetuated by the unpopular King Solomon against his Northern Kingdom. Was this interpretation buried in modern times to justify slavery and segregation? You will need to judge for yourself. The book is divided into eight lessons, each ending with a suggested spiritual practice. The reader gets a solid understanding of the Song of Solomon wrapped around an unforgettable parable: the story of an African-American baseball coach turned congressional representative, who, influenced by the Song of Solomon, spent his life dismantling injustice. The Disorderly Parable Bible Studies teach the way Jesus taught, by using stories of everyday people and things to illustrate spiritual truths.

Anne Bronte The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (with an Introduction by Mary Augusta Ward)

Originally published in 1848, “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” is the second and final novel written by Anne Bronte. Considered one of the first feminist novels, it was both instantly successful and highly controversial. The story follows the relationship between Gilbert Markham, a prosperous farmer, and the mysterious widow Mrs. Helen Graham, who takes up residence with only her son and a servant in the nearby tumbledown mansion of Wildfell Hall. Told in a series of letters, Gilbert describes how he falls in love with the elusive Helen and learns of her tragic past. The victim of small town gossip, Helen finally tells Gilbert how she has left her aristocratic and alcoholic husband in order to save her young son from his influence. The novel was far more realistic in both tone and subject matter than other popular novels of its time and boldly challenged the accepted treatment of women in Victorian England. While Bronte rejected the romantic style popular at that time and frankly addressed the obstacles and prejudices faced by women, Helen and Gilbert’s story is essentially one of love and hope. A classic of the Victorian era as well as a feminist tale far ahead of its time, “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” is a must read for fans of the Bronte sisters. This edition includes an introduction by Mary Augusta Ward.

John W. Herbst Development of an Icon

The most extensive royal accounts in the Hebrew Bible are those of kings David (the «Succession Narrative,» usually identified as 2 Sam 9-20 and 1 Kgs 1-2) and Solomon (the «Solomon Story,» 1 Kgs 3-11). Yet, even though Solomon immediately follows David in the Deuteronomistic History, little has been done to correlate these accounts. But what if these passages were meant to be read together? Utilizing the «Double Redaction» theory, Herbst proposes that an exilic «Deuteronomist» inserted the Succession Narrative into the Deuteronomistic History, then revised the Solomon Story in light of this addition. His key contribution was 1 Kings 1-2, a passage designed to connect the two larger sections, highlighting the similarities and differences of the two kings. Interpreting the composition history of 2 Samuel and 1 Kings in this way gives new insight into the Deuteronomist's views regarding kings and kingship. This approach also solves many of the problems of the Solomon story, in which the narrator appears to simultaneously praise and criticize Solomon. And along the way, Herbst offers new insights into individual passages, further enhancing our understanding of the message of the Deuteronomistic History.
